Instead of yet another traffic light.  It could have a cafe so shoppers could take a break and watch traffic roll by on Scottsdale Road.  This would ease traffic congestion in an area with no shortage of cars.  At least move the signs up to remind drivers that flashing red means stop, then go.  Every time I'm caught at this light everyone sits there waiting for the lights to shut off completely even when there are no pedestrians.

Kevin,

Thanks for the idea. Scottsdale and Phoenix both explored the idea of a pedestrian bridge to connect the two shopping centers, but passed because the cost was estimated to exceed $3.5 million.

The pedestrian crossing signal was built instead (for around $250,000).

We also recognize the need for additional public education on how to deal with this signal - our traffic engineers have seen the same issue you noted, where people don't realize they can proceed on a flashing red once pedestrians are clear.

So we are working on additional public education on the signal and considering whether different signage would help.

Wait until another family sues both cities for damages when a member is injured or killed. That would be proactive and respond to the good and welfare of the community and it's visitors. That crossing signal is a joke.  Public education is not going to do it.

$3.5 million and they baulked!

The present set-up was a cheap fix. Right spot but wrong configuration. I was expecting a straight-forward traffic light. As a daily or almost daily visitor to Kierland, I can say definitely that this complicated system is ignored, misread, or whatever else you want to call it. It deters me, for one, of visiting both sides of the road, and will cause a fatality one day. Would a plain traffic light slow the flow too much? From my observation, it Needs some slowing!

That crosswalk is a joke. Whoever's idea it was should be fired. Just try driving that area at rush hour now. It was bad even before that silly crosswalk.

The city didn't do it right the first time so it was a waste of tax payer money. Better planning to budget for a sky bridge would have been better and in the meantime the pedestrians could have walked up to the corner to use the cross walks instead. Why not just make them do this instead. If the business' wanted the crossing where it is, then let them foot the bill for an overpass. This was one big FAIL for the city.

That crosswalk is a joke. Confusing to both drivers and pedestrians. Build a bridge from money saved by not building that silly DDC.
